Borderlands 4 (BL4): Red Chest Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

Red Chests are the highest-value loot containers in Borderlands 4 — significantly more likely to yield high-tier, rare, and Legendary gear than standard Weapon Containers or White Chests.

With over 140 Red Chest entries across all 28 areas of Kairos, this is the most comprehensive loot-tracking resource on the Borderlands 4 interactive maps — every static spawn, mission-gated chest, boss-gated chest, and unique secret room entry documented at exact coordinates.

Four Types of Red Chests in Borderlands 4

Not all Red Chests are immediately accessible. Four distinct variants appear across Kairos, each with a different unlock method:

  • Normal Red Chests — the standard variant. Find them and interact to claim the loot. No prerequisites.

  • Chained Red Chests — physically wrapped in chains and locked by enemy presence. Defeat all enemies in the immediate area to break the chains. Several are inside enemy camps where clearing the mob wave is required before the chains release.

  • Container Red Chests — located inside shipping containers protected by energy force fields. Lower the barrier by solving a localised puzzle: hacking a nearby console, removing and placing power batteries in sockets, shooting electrical fuses, or ground-slamming an orange pressure pad. The specific method varies per entry and is documented in each guide entry.

  • Puzzle Red Chests — the rarest variant, requiring multi-step environmental solutions. The Puzzle Red Chest in The Howl is the most complex: damage 4 Calfhorns in the area enough to weaken them, then use the grapple hook to tie each one, which lowers the force field protecting the chest below the metal railing.

Mission-Gated and Boss-Gated Red Chests

A significant number of Red Chests only become accessible in specific circumstances:

  • Side Mission-gated chests: Several Red Chests inside the Ripper base in The Howl are only available during the Savage Salvage Side Mission — four chests inside the base, plus one after defeating the cargo thresher. A chest in Coastal Bonescape inside a container is only accessible during Abduction Injunction. One in Hungering Plain is only reachable during No Place Like Home.

  • Boss-gated chests: Defeating named bosses unlocks Red Chests in the immediate post-fight area. Key boss-gated chests include: after Voraxis and after Idolator Sol in the Fadefields, after The Oppressor/The Backhive/Bio-Bulkhead in Dissected Plateau, after Horace in Hungering Plain, after Sludgemaw during All Charged Up, after Mimicron in the Tipping Point Order Bunker, after Shadowpelt in Cuspid Climb, and after Arjay in Upper Dominion — which yields 4 Red Chests simultaneously.

The Burrito Secret Room: 2 Red Chests in Upper Dominion

Destroying all 15 Burritos across Dominion City opens Dave's secret room in Upper Dominion — behind the waterfall on the upper level. Inside the room alongside Dave the Burrito are 2 Red Chests and 4 White Chests.

The 2 Red Chests are tracked as a single "Red Chest x2" entry in this guide and are the only Red Chests gated behind a collectible activity rather than a mission or boss kill.

The Best Early Red Chest Farm

The Stillshore Chained Red Chest in Coastal Bonescape — at the southwest point of the area — is the most accessible early farming target in the game. It respawns every time the save is loaded, alongside a wave of Rippers and Badasses that provide both XP and additional loot drops.

All Red Chests scale to the current Vault Hunter level, so the Stillshore farm remains productive at any point in the campaign for quickly testing a new loadout's viability.

All Red Chest Locations in Borderlands 4

The highest chest densities are in Coastal Bonescape (the largest single-area count — 25+ across cliffs, water, platforms, and the mission-gated entries), Cuspid Climb (20+ across Order bases, Ripper camps, Ancient Crawlers, and elevated terrain), Idolator's Noose (15+ including the Order Bunker and multiple Chained types), and The Howl (15+ including Puzzle, Container, Chained, and the Savage Salvage mission cluster).

All 140+ locations are in the interactive guide below with chest type, access condition, and exact coordinates per entry.
